Usually the only time I see my hometown in the news is when the latest most dangerous or most miserable cities list is released, so I was surprised to see this gem while browsing Deadspin.

YSU was picked seventh in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, its lowest preseason ranking since joining the conference in 1997.  First year coach Eric Wolford didn’t take too kindly to the ranking and left us with this:

“In some parts of this world we live in, if you disrespect someone, you may lose your life. Right or wrong. I don’t handle disrespect well, and I’m sure my players won’t either.”

That pretty much sums up the Youngstown mentality.  Despite reaching the FCS Semifinals in 2006, the Penguins haven’t had much sustained success since Senator Tressel left for Ohio State in 2001.  If nothing else the rankings snub and subsequent quote will motivate players and fans heading into next season.
